Prevent File Separation with RoTAC Rotary File Grip System

RoTAC Rotary File Grip System

Root canal preparation should be efficient, predictable, and safe.
The objective is simple: create a tapered preparation with maximum file safety.

Many clinicians are frustrated by the growing complexity of modern rotary systems—multiple file systems, motors, torque settings, speeds, and directional controls. Despite this technology, the fear of file separation remains constant.

Prevention is always better than file retrieval.

Sophisticated motors still lack the finesse and tactile sensitivity of the human hand. High RPMs increase the risk of cyclic fatigue and torsional stress—especially in tight, curved canals.

Understanding the fundamentals of canal shaping with manual tactile control simplifies treatment and reduces the risk of sudden motor-driven file separation. This concept led to the development of RoTAC Rotary File Grips.

With 45+ years of endodontic experience and four years focused on preventing rotary file separation, the RoTAC system has proven to be a safe and practical approach to rotary instrumentation.

How RoTAC Works

1. The File
Triangular-fluted rotary files shape canals efficiently in both clockwise and counter-clockwise rotations, maximizing cutting efficiency.

2. File Control
The RoTAC File Grip is soft, ergonomic, and easy to hold, allowing precise manual control with true tactile sensitivity.

Using a watch-winding or back-and-forth motion, the triangular file cuts the entire 360° canal circumference with only a small reciprocating arc (about 60°–90°).
This achieves full rotational cutting without overstressing the file.

3. Operator Awareness
The clinician remains attentive to file movement, feeling stress levels and seeing canal progression long before separation could occur.

Clinical Technique

This technique was implemented and evaluated over four years at the University of Utah School of Dentistry clinic, in more than 750 clinical cases with no file separations.

True Rotary Tactile Sensitivity prevents file separation because the file is never overstressed.

Motor-driven rotary file separation is a common problem—but most problems have simple solutions.
